Houston, Texas

Senior Advisor

January 1996 - July 2004

·         Provided technical design and commissioning support for unusual daily yield accounting applications: sending reconciled results to rigorous process design model to support joint-venture business needs, and clients wanting reconciliation with quadratic programming as well as expert system.  Defined functionality needed for future use in batch-based operations, e.g. specialty chemicals and minerals.

·         Acted as technical lead or team member for many projects integrating Advisor yield accounting software with various legacy systems.  These included: two large multi-refinery projects (5 and 8 refineries respectively); a Gulf Coast ethylene producer; European two-country refiner; large grass-roots refinery in Asia-Pacific; North America natural gas producer-processor with 9 geographical locations and two-tier daily information integration; new SE Asia petrochemical plant.   Experience with uploading material balance results to SAP using BOM format and supporting FTZ reporting.

·         Provided technical assistance for development of a plan vs. actual product to complement PIMS and Advisor.  Conducted PIMS LP planning system educational classes.  Developed a “white-paper” on LP Backcasting and outlined the different resources required for the effort to be done successfully.

·         Assisted several large Information System Planning programs: Gulf Coast refiner-marketer; SE Asia grassroots lube plant and headquarters; South African refiner; Pacific Rim petrochemical producer; UK refiner.

·         Aspen Technology acquired Setpoint in January 1996.

Setpoint, Inc.

Houston, Texas

Senior Staff Engineer

October 1994 - January 1996

·         Worked with client and software developers of plant and pipeline scheduling system (ProSked) to establish reasonable balance between user ‘wants vs. needs’ in a cost-and-time constrained environment.  Application used G2 and involved crude blend optimization using GAMS.

Bonner & Moore Associates

Houston, Texas

Senior Associate

May 1985 - October 1994

·         Installed many LP planning (RPMS), crude oil evaluation (ASSAY) and production accounting systems (APPLY) for different clients worldwide.  Conducted associated personnel training, project management and system documentation responsibilities.  Some work involved specialized multi-period and multi-plant models with recognition of transport modes; also, some experience using integer optimization.

·         EPA certified primary analyst.  Assisted refiners in the preparation of a Baseline document for future production of ‘conventional’ gasoline and later participated in a review of other Baseline documents submitted to the EPA.  Assisted in development of a commercial gasoline quality tracking and EPA reporting system for reformulated gasoline.

·         Developed and used LP models of PADD refining capacity for many government and industry sponsored projects to investigate economic impact associated with change, e.g. process technology analysis, capital spending programs, heavy crude oil processing, gasoline volatility reduction, reduced levels of diesel fuel sulfur and aromatics, and reformulated gasoline.

Process Superintendent

April 1983 - May 1985
October 1979 – April 1983

·         Conducted monthly operations planning activities using large multi-period LP and small gasoline blending LP.  Evaluated reasonableness of process unit LP yield vectors.  Reconciled operational and financial plant performance vs. plan.

·         Managed line operations for two naphtha desulfurizers, two high severity reformers and two small crude distillation process units; responsibility for 65 hourly, supervisory and technical personnel. Extensive experience with on-stream problem diagnosis and mechanical work, scheduled turn-around planning, and facility lay-away and start-up.  Worked as process operator during 4-month OCAW work stoppage.
